today

I had big plans for the yard today and as of 4:00 I'd finished pretty much nothin.  I was going to roast a chicken for dinner, but my get dinner in the oven time was foiled when I couldn't find Clara and Grady - they'd gone into the neighbors without asking and were too busy playing to hear me knocking on the door.  Not good.

We went to Grady's baseball game tonight and he FINALLY HIT THE BALL!!!! and it was a good hit!  High up in the air almost past 3rd base.  What a boy.  Hard to describe how happy I was for him.  My voice was horse from all the screaming.  He sat there for a minute after he hit it, not sure what to do, it had never happened before after all.  "RUN GRAY RUN - HURRY RUN!!!" we all screamed and then he started loping towards first base until the basemen was hot on his tail and then he arched his little back and booked it to first.  It might have been my happiest moment in the whole past month.

No dinner.  We went to in n out.  super good for us.  we were celebrating - and no chicken had been made, remember.

We came home and planted.  Leah went to bed and we got all the flowers put in.  The sun was down and the kids were laughing on the swing set.  I had my little bed all planted and the patio still felt warm under my bare feet from the hot day.  I was watering my new little flowers - and everything else had been cleaned up.  And really - that is the best moment ever isn't it?  The days done - everyone's happy and content and it's spring and we can finally be outside after a long winter and I've got muddy hands and muddy feet and we're all kind of sunburnt and the mosquitos are out and I'm watering the plants.  That's  when my Mom always seemed happiest outside - in the evening when her work was done and she was watering her newly planted flowers.  I think that's when she felt like she could finally relax and that feeling was contagious and now when I get to that point of the day, I feel so happy inside.  And so content.  The kids went to bed way too late.  But they were happy.  I really can't think of a more perfect day.

And just for the record - this is what's going in this year; carrots, onions, 3 kinds of potatoes, garlic, fennel, red and golden beets, 19 tomato plants, lots of different kinds or herbs, 12 pumpkin plants, zucchini, armenian and regular cucumbers, butternut and spaghetti squash, red and green bell peppers, jalapenos, banana peppers, peas, green beens, kale, cabbage, spinach, bib and regular lettuce, and...... what else?? Corn!  Don't forget the corn.  Probably a few other things I can't think of right now, but that's pretty good for starters right?  That's all about 2/3 done and hopefully by the end of the week we'll have the rest in. whew.  good night.
